Throughout February i have been working on my fashion art and culture brief and i have chosen to do subcultures.
I have chosen to look at the subcultures of women throughout the century and also to show women breaking out of their constraints and ridding themselves of the corset.
so for this part of the brief i have looked at Gibson girls, flappers, the mini, power dressing and emos. i have chosen these subcultures as the Gibson girls were a subculture of corsets and wanting to be what men saw as beautiful, the flappers were a controversial subculture as they removed the corset and went out and had fun their were well known for the promiscuity unheard of back in their time. i chose the mini as it is a well known piece of a iconic fashion and shows women showing off their sexuality and breaking away from the constraints of the 50's fashion. i chose power dressing as women are now getting more and more powerful in the work place and finally getting to be treated equal to men and showing their power through fashion.
i chose emo as my last subculture as girls are becoming alot more controversial and having piercing all over their faces, dying their hair and wearing what they wish the emo subculture is a bit like the goth subculture yet the people in it are more emotional hence the name "emo".
for this brief i have chosen to make a corset and on each panel put transfer an image of each of these subcultures i have chosen to make a corset as a corset is a powerful piece of fashion history and i have chosen these subcultures for breaking away from the corset so to have these images on something that used to constraint women i feel will be quite powerful.
